Aqua

inspired by a story from the book of Italo Calvino Invisible cities

for bassoon percussion and video animation

The piece Aqua for bassoon and percussion is inspired by the story Isaura from the book of Italo Calvino ‘Invisible cities’.
The strong visual element of the story is the fact that all characters: the water, the gods and the city are operating in a constant upward motion. The story is an imaginative metaphor of the path that the water follows from its natural source underneath the earth to its trip towards the surface. Simultaneously the story points out in a symbolic way the relation of the water with the construction of the city and the human activities in the presence of the upper and the under Gods. Men and gods, nature and technology ,‘under’ and ‘above’, form the structural elements of the music. Continuous flowing lines which vary in speed and intensity and undefined fragmented, pointilistic, sound effects are combinded with metalic multilayers of sound and glass sound surfaces.
The animation film was developed with students of the dpt. of animation AKV|St.Joost, art academy Breda.
The piece is composed for Bram van Sambeek and Marijn Korff de Gidts
